Driving down the road this morning going about 35mph when this black Nissan Murano (path shown in green) darted out of a parking lot right past a stopped Coca-Cola truck. Had I been paying less attention I would have t-boned her. I’m the blue arrow. She didn’t brake, in fact I don’t think she even saw me until I laid on the horn. I don’t understand how some people get in their cars in the morning and just say, “Eh, fuck it. Why check to see if there’s any cross-traffic?” I had to absolutely slam on the brakes to stop in time. ABS kicked in immediately - had I been in my old Honda without ABS I definitely would have hit her because the road was wet and the brakes surely would have locked up.

Be safe out there, guys. There are terrible drivers (can they even be called drivers?) in our midst.

This is the reason I have a dash cam.

Every once in a while I have two of these WTF moments in a day. Whenever that happens, I get home, fire up Craigslist and look for the ultimate commuter vehicle. Something with metal bumpers that could take a hit and still allow me to drive to work if (heaven forbid) I’m not able to avoid an accident like this.

I usually plug in a max of $5K and see what what comes up.

I had this happen about a year after I started driving... Only there was traffic in both directions. Someone pulled out making a left turn without bothering about cross traffic, and not only that but didn’t bother with the go pedal. I came to a dead stop with them still crossing in front of me, so did the other direction. With about a foot to spare.

I was driving our old Montana the had non-functioning ABS... if it had been working they’d probably be dead.

if its any consolation, had you hit her it would have been her fault. probably cited for failing to yield right of way.

Doesnt ABS actually take longer to stop, just allows you to actually still have steering wheel control while braking hard? Locked up wheels should stop faster but will just make your tires into squares.

Either way, definitely hate the dumb dumbs who just assume oncoming traffic will slow or stop for you. They havent driven enough cars with terrible or even no brakes at all to realize you cant trust others to stop for you under any circumstances.

When I worked in Milwaukee I was thinking the same, except I was looking at boxy 80's sedans

Had a guy towing a boat pull out on me last night. Thankfully I had plenty of time to react, but instead of turning and accelerating, he went straight across to an adjacent parking lot and SLOWED DOWN for the entrance, his boat 3/4 of the way still in front of me.

All I would need is big bumpers, and the ability to take a lilcking and keep on ticking.

Those big boxes are sometimes on my list, too.

It would be fun to not flinch, and accidentally PIT someone who was being careless/pushy... or to realize that your stopping distance is always 5' longer than you thought it was.

Ooops!

Just remember to always turn your wheels away from the other car before you get out to exchange insurance information so the accident report looks like you were making an effort to avoid the accident.

And yes, I have thought about this.

Just claim the quarter panel caught your tire and wrenched the wheel from your hands.

OOPS

Locked up wheels are a double whammy. Not only can you not turn at all, but you can also not stop effectively. Tires need to be have traction to speed up and slow down a car. No traction, you either get a burnout on acceleration, or a skid on braking. Neither are effective uses of tires!

The only way that a car with ABS would take more distance to stop than one without is if the ABS system is way too conservative and starts pumping the brakes even when the tires aren’t about to break loose. In modern cars, they’ve got it down pretty well to where the ABS kicks in exactly when you need it.

This crap happens all the time! If you’re hauling a 30-foot trailer behind you, make sure you have extra clearance! You aren’t driving a Smart!

I mean anyone would have known it was her fault, but I suppose dashcam footage would have been good “look at this shit!” material.

Precisely. I have been aggressively telling Oppo to “look at this shit!” for the last three years or so, totally worth the price of admission.
